Joe Barry is one of the true legends of Louisiana swamp pop music and this first volume in Edsel's Crazy Cajun series of Huey Meaux productions picks up Barry's recording career after his hit, "I'm a Fool to Care." These mid-'60s recordings find him working everything from Elvis-styled material ("You Belong to My Heart") to true swamp pop ("Heartbroken Love") to Duke Records-styled R&B (three takes of "Fat's in the Fire"). Throughout it all, Barry's voice is a marvelous thing to hear, full of soulful swoops and much down home feeling. If you're a fan of Louisiana swamp pop music, consider these 17 tracks a lost piece of the puzzle and a chunk of vintage music well worth owning. Top notch liner notes from John Lomax III, too.
